Normally I do instant coffee because I’m lazy. But once in a while I want something better.

I don’t have a coffee maker. My wife has two but I’m not going to be responsible for any part of anything that goes wrong if I use them.

As a result I end up rigging something together when I do want decent coffee. In this case a canning funnel offers plenty of side support for a coffee filter and a mesh spider kept it in the funnel.

Last night I made some star anise cookies. Definitely came out too soft for my wants. Usable but not perfect. Which is a shame because I liked the shelf stable ingredients because it had no milk or butter and we keep our eggs at room temperature. Back to the drawing board. I’m thinking oatmeal anise cookies next time.

Cookies recipe I don’t have any cookie cutters so I used a biscuit cutter. I reduced the recipe to a third. The anise flavor is there but subtle. I would double the anise if I didb it again.

As a non-regular coffee drinker, I used to fiddle around with setups like this, but realised at a certain point that I could simply pour off the liquid between two mugs enough times to get rid of the grounds. Done in a sink with running water, it works well, with minimal cleanup. Main downside is that the pouring action tends to lose heat. So for those who love their scorching-hot coffee, they’d prolly want to put it in a microwave, just after.

I must admit, though, instant coffee seems to have gotten a lot better over the years. So either way is pretty good, altho it’s nice to have some of the more exotic flavors of the ground stuff.

With my tiny kitchen, I take comfort that I don’t actually need any particular devices, nor filter paper to make decent coffee.

I appreciate the effort you’re going through. I don’t know if I trust myself that early in the morning to be slinging coffee back and forth between cups.

These cookies look good. How did you make them? Do you have a recipe?

The recipe website is slow to unresponsive.
