Today's headlines in the Daily Express!

The "Give Us a Proper Brexit" crusade calls for leaving the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), slashing red tape for businesses and enforcing a 12-mile exclusion zone around the UK for British vessels only.

Brexit is a utopian revolutionary project, and like all URPs it can never be achieved! Juche Britannia! Consign Earth to the Dustbin of History! The People Struggle for Brexit! &c.

    Revolutions are *hungry*.

      @cstross

What are they going to blame after leaving the ECHR? Are they going to scapegoat a minority and say that Brexit now requires "removing" that minority?

The ECHR is the only thing giving people in the UK any human rights. If the UK leaves it, then there would no longer be any human rights in Britain. All there would be are assorted laws that parliament would be totally free to revoke and replace with whatever they want, including 1930s-style stuff.

The lack of a written constitution or powerful second chamber in the UK combined with fascists leading the polls is putting Britain in an incredibly dangerous situation.

@cstross Minimum distance* from the UK to Ireland is 1.3km (about .85 miles) between Magilligan point and Greencastle, so are they proposing to annex Donegal as part of Brexit now?
Because Donegal is in the EU and the EU is less of a fan than you'd think of people annexing its territory.

*Minimum distance by sea, obviously. Minimum distance by land is zero.

@cstross Yay! Let's breach Article 38 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and jam the channel, what could possibly go wrong?

@cstross Ah, I see. The real problem with Brexit was that they didn't Brexit hard enough.

@markdennehy @cstross you think these people give a suffering fig for Nordie Land?

It didn't enter their calculations and machinations in 2016, it "robbed" them of their Glorious Sunlit Uplands in 2020, it is an irritation to them, nothing more.

@cstross Brexit was never "the will of the people" (because there is no such thing) but it is far less the will of the people now than it was 10 years ago.

For all their anti-migrant rhetoric the only way they can push things further is with violence against Britons.

@raymaccarthy @FediThing Yes, although adopting it is mandatory for EU membership: the Brexiters are somehow convinced that they want rid of it (despite it initially being called for by their object of veneration Winston Churchill.)

Yup, that's why the UK is still a member of the ECHR.

If they leave the ECHR that leaves the UK with precisely zero protections of human rights. It would be entirely up to the whim of whoever controls parliament whether there are elections, whether people are allowed to vote, whether people live or die etc.

In most other democratic countries their PR electoral system and written constitution protects human rights, but the UK's FPTP system and lack of any written constitution means it's usually just one party that controls everything.

The UK is in a really, really dangerous position for civil liberties.

@cstross Ah yes, it's β€œThe reason why Brexit didn't work is because it wasn't REAL Brexit." It's the right-wing version of the continually-moving-the-goalposts logic that has a certain class of tankie telling you that the reason the Soviet Union wasn't paradise on Earth is because it wasn't REAL Communism (that part at least is true, but …)

I assume the Real Brexiteers won't be happy until the British Empire is restored. Or not even then, because of course it won't be the REAL British Empire …

Look, if you don't have an Armada of Ships of the Line, then you don't have a proper empire.

@aadeacon @cstross the one plus side of pulling out of the ECHR is that it is probably the only way to give Nazis the death penalty instead of '30 years seems long enough.'

30 years of public contempt and humiliation is nowhere *near* long enough. Why give them the ease of an early death?

@cstross I have pointed out before that the only clause in the Convention that has no wriggle room is the one outlawing torture, It would seem that the Daily Mail et. al. want to torture people They are sadists.
