Yes, that happened all the time back in my university days, when I was a PhD student.
And it _was_ harder, since frankly my written English was better than that of anyone else in the department.
Though the worst texts were those by my Russian and North Korean co-workers. I mean, at least with the native German speakers I could usually guess what they wanted to express, but not with these two.

@juergen_hubert I once wrote a article n English for German English-language fanzine. They "proofread" it so that it was more German in terms of grammar
