    #WritersCoffeeClub 1st June. Are there ethical principles fiction must adhere to? What are they?

    I learned them and use the term:

    Morals are internal, personal values
    Ethics are rules set by a governing agency.

    So there would be no blanket ethical code for writers.

    I publish on AO3 and PIXIV, and as such, I am bound by their TOS. They are different, and sometimes my writer shows the difference.

    I also have a moral code which includes:
    * no plagiarism
    * no lewding real people
    * giving credit for anything I borrow.
    * If I must punch, punch up.
    * Trigger tag appropriately
    * Avoid *ism(s) and correct transgressions when they are pointed out to me.
    * Treat fellow writers and my team with respect.
    * Pay a fair amount for purchased services such as art.

    I am sure there are others. I strive to be a high-class moral person.

      @NaraMoore@sakurajima.moe in general I think all topics are available in fiction; that is our society’s space to talk about things that might otherwise cause harm.

      But you own everything you write, and I don’t believe in “just asking questions” as a driver. If your fiction includes such a topic, what you are getting at should be fairly clear, even if it is not for characters and groups within your fiction. Otherwise I am going to assume on the author’s behalf to their potential embarrassment. A “just asking questions” story about people living happily under fascism is going to be taken as an endorsement of fascism, for example.

        @NullNowhere

        Sorry, I don't really get what you're driving at.

        For example, I make no mention of "just asking questions." It is also not the kind of lit. I write. I don't set out what-ifs.

        Certainly, I agree that an author's philosophy and beliefs will show up in their writing. Mine do. But I don't know how that relates to ethics or the moral guidelines I follow.

        If somehow you took one of my comments as being stated as a universal rule all authors should follow, I think I clearly stated that morals are individually constructed, not universal.

        Feel free to explain if you wish.

          @NaraMoore@sakurajima.moe I was answering the question from a personal view; I wasn't directing it at you.

            @NaraMoore@sakurajima.moe I (missed a word; not) may have just understood the purpose of your post. But I had no problem with anything you wrote.

              Haha, amazing what a difference POV can make. As a general comment rather than a response to my answer and it now makes sense. Thank you for clearing up my misunderstanding.

                @NaraMoore@sakurajima.moe you’re the only one I have seen on this tag so I thought it was something you ran embarrassingly enough.

                  I see. I understand. And I thought I was privileged. Ego shattered.

                  But I am surprised you haven't seen anyone else it a very popular hashtag. Are the connections of Sakurajima social that bad?

                    @NaraMoore@sakurajima.moe it’s pretty weak at times. I’ve been considering changing instances for a bit but just haven’t really sat down to think about it or the logistics.
