I grew up in Tacoma, Washington. There is one movie that everyone I graduated with mentions and lists off locations from.10 Things I Hate About You was released in 1999 and stars Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik. It’s a modern adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare.Cameron (Gordon Levitt) wants to date Bianca Stratford (Oleynik) but her father won’t let her date until her older sister Kat (Stiles) who is completely anti-social does. So Cameron tricks Joey Donner, a rich student into paying Patrick (Ledger) to date Kat. Hilarity ensues Patrick finds himself falling for the girl he started going after for money. For a romantic comedy of the 80s and 90s, 10 Things has actually aged pretty well. There’s no surprise sexual assault gag, Patrick actually takes a drunk Kat home during one scene, enraging her when she gets embarrassed that he won’t kiss her when he thinks she’s too drunk. There’s a big iconic scene during this sequence that takes place in Tacoma’s Stadium Bowl, as Patrick sings to Kat in front of all the world.“I want you baby!”Tacoma’s Stadium High School stood in for the Padua High School of the movie. An easy fit given that Stadium was built in an old hotel that looks like a freaking castle.Entrance to Stadium High School in TacomaSo much work is done in every scene to put tiny details to characterize whoever’s space you’re in. From the Principal played by Allison Janney writing erotica to the band posters chosen for Kat’s room when Bianca and Cameron are searching for clues about what boys Kat would like. There’s even a poster there for The Gits, a grunge band whose lead singer Mia Zapata was murdered after a show right as the band was getting big, which as someone who grew up there during the time the movie was filmed, a girl like Kat in Seattle or Tacoma would absolutely have been in to.The movie weaves back and forth between modern slang and iambic pentameter with ease, even the more Shakespearean lines are tweaked to fit the portrayals of the characters by these actors in this place and time. There was so much work and love poured into this movie by the cast and crew, and it’s such a nice one to watch. Kat and Patrick bantering is so much fun to listen to, as is Kat annoying her English teacher. Just a fantastic movie and one I always enjoy rewatching.

@star You mean colonialism? Sure. But I’m not talking about empires. Rather, people and places that are targets for imperialism.

One big reason I’m grateful for video games is that you can come from anywhere in the world and make a smash success. Let me explain. Most movies come from the USA. And not just the USA, a specific location the USA: Los Angeles. What about music? A little more diverse. Occasionally, there’s a breakout band from the UK. Sometimes France, Italy, Germany. And lately, South Korea. But the majority of best-selling artists are Americans. Video games, though, are much different. It is truly international. Important studios are found everywhere: Japan, China, Poland, Morocco, Italy, Brazil, Canada, India. And the stories are becoming ever more diverse. For example, Venba is about an Indian family immigrating to Canada, figuring out their new environment. The main character is the wife. And what you’re trying to do is restore lost recipes that didn’t make it through the journey. So with trial and error, you’re cooking Indian dishes. Now can the video game industry be better? Yes, I’m not going to pretend there isn’t toxicity. Every day, there’s a fresh new controversy. But nevertheless, stories are being told that Hollywood refuses to touch.

I am trying to make it through my Steam backlog. This is a Herculean task. I have now played every game I bought on Steam between October 2013 and June 2016. A lot of it was schlock. Some of it, unexpectedly, was not. Linea, the Game is not a favourite of mine. But it is at least an original idea. The only real objective is to survive for 60 seconds while the game steadily accelerates and your nervous system does the same. There is no destination. Just time bearing down on you. I found myself shouting at the screen every time I clipped an object. That reaction felt justified for about half a second. Then it became obvious it was always my fault. The game is very clear about that. There are leaderboards, after all. Your failure is recorded. Publicly. What amused me is how naked the design is. Four levels. No story. No characters. Just abstract geometry, electronic music, and pressure. There is even a paid DLC that exists purely to make the game harder, complete with its own separate high score tables, which feels both honest and unhinged. The mechanics still do not compel me. It pushes minimalism to the edge of austerity. But there is merit here, especially if you like games that strip everything away until only reaction time, panic, and self-inflicted blame remain.

GodsArena Online is my latest attempt at getting into MMORPGs—something I’ve been meaning to do for ages, but nothing has yet pulled me in. At first, the low poly aesthetic drew me in. Admittedly, it’s cute. But the UI is rough. Just the act of trying to equip your character is difficult. And it’s not as though I haven’t tried before. So this one is a “No” for me. However, the community is interesting. Lots of Asian folk hanging around, particularly Filipinos. Seeing Tagalog in chat—even if I couldn’t understand it—was neat. I appreciate this is a hobby project made by people who just want to relive the glory of '00s era MMORPGs. And I think that people who love it are probably enthralled. But I can almost feel the time sink, so I’ll let others enjoy it.

Thank you! Yes, Australia. I didn’t go out to get a fresh loaf of bread to make a sandwich. It’s supposed to cool significantly tomorrow, so I’ll go out then. This is 15 minutes ago… [image: 5c464d36-214d-45b7-9aae-d0ed8f7322a0.jpeg]

@gardenvarietylinguist@dice.camp Here’s an example of how AI could be useful. I sung a melody, asked AI to generate a guitar riff based on that melody. After additional iterations, a cool psych-rock tune was made. But the original melody came from me—even if the singing kind of sucks. It’s a cool concept. However, if I were to release this commercially, I’d prefer it if actual humans were to perform it since humans are more adept at the small details. https://atomicpoet.org/@atomicpoet/posts/B246EgTa3WF75ZHtei
