I mentioned this on my defunct blog many years ago, but early 90s TSR experimented with Ascending AC for d20 in Gamma World. It was released in 1992. This is 8 years before WotC took over and went on to make 3rd edition D&D.Waynes Books recently took pictures comparing pages from the 1992 Gamma World and the 2001 D&D Player's Handbook.1992 Gamma World uses THAC which is equivalent to 2001 D&D BAB.https://waynesbooks.games/2025/11/30/buck-rogers-xxvc-gamma-world-4e-add-2e-sci-fi-prototype-d20/#dnd #ttrpg #rpg #osr #gametheory

@randomwizard@social.vivaldi.net The first wording requires a secondary inference to understand it's meaning. E.g., one had to add the thought "Higher than <X> means X is no good, I need X+1"."Roll number or higher" is immediately actionable and does not require any inference. As a result, it is also less susceptible to misoperation. Some people will see the '11' and immediately think 'I need to hit 11' if they do not read the whole thing. Meanwhile, someone can see/hear the '12' and accidentally do the right thing.
