#JustFinished (again) Children of Time by Adrian TchaikovskyI had forgotten what a beautiful, hopeful ending Tchaikovsky gave us. As a life-long arachnophobe, I might not have ever read this book if I had known about the alien species. I am so glad I didn't know, as the book is truly excellent. Tchaikovsky's love of many-legged things shines through and allows us to feel it with him. (To some extent; he doesn't work ACTUAL miracles.)#SFF #SciFi #books #bookstodon

#JustFinished Slow Gods by Clare NorthI read this twice in a row. I felt like I didn't give it the gravity it deserved the first time. This is largely a treatise on the limited but grand power of love and acceptance with a realistic exploration of what lies outside it.Or, a pilot who should be mad runs around known space as a natural disaster unfolds. He grows from a lost, bewildered, callous boy into ... well, more. You'll need to read it to find out.#SciFi #books #bookstodon #SFF

Interestingly, there was a lot of talk about the pacing during the book club meeting. Apparently, many people don't like it. I recognize there was ebb and flow and it wasn't the usual way to do it. Personally, I saw it as rebuilding the tension and leaving us to steep in the mystery of what was happening.
