Endless kickstarters of derivative games produce mountains of indistinguishable plastic trash components, shipping big boxes of crap to whales all over the world that provide the funding for designers to perhaps break even on a passion project ... Since getting into 18xx games I wish that more game genres could begin printing games that reuse a common library of pieces. You could just ship a nice printed rulebook and perhaps a paper or cardboard game board (kind of like the wargaming world has done forever).

Posters on r/boardgames like to justify what they're doing as collecting, but is clicking on dozens of kickstarters out of FOMO and filling up literally an entire room of a house really collecting, or a compulsion?

@muninn294 Speaking as a lifetime boardgame enthusiast: I own three.
I've just never had the money, shelf space, or inclination to hoard. And I sell, trade, or discard games that I know I don't care to devote myself to.
But I love going to a game shop, cafe, or game convention to try new games or play old favorites.
I also think the Internet version of any hobby community will always look more extreme.
