    #WritersCoffeeClub 15. From which real-world events have you taken inspiration?

    It's not exactly "taking inspiration" - more like, "what historical events do I need to research in order to understand the context of this folk tale?"

    That being said, there is _one_ historical event which I could see writing an entire book about - the Thirty Years' War. This was the most traumatic war in German history, and I would have absolutely no problem finding enough folk tales about it to fill an entire book.

    Another possible angle would be to write a book about all the pro-Emperor propaganda in German folklore works during the 1815–1871 period. But that would be a more scholarly text, and not a folk tale collection as such.

        @chupa_ There are are always segments of the population that are worse off than others in a war. When you are the one being killed, it doesn't matter if other segments of the population survive.

        But the Thirty Years' War lasted far longer than World War II, and killed off a third of the population or more. Modern-day Germans often underestimate how massively it shaped the country because it was so long ago, but once you look at historical sources a rather different picture emerges.

            @chupa_

            I dunno. Yes, the Napoleonic Wars led to the loss of the position of Emperor for the Holy Roman Empire, but considering what a useless wanker the Second Empire produced later on, I can only say: "Good Riddance!"
