@gwynnion What they mean, and what they don't like, is that phones are allowing us to see that we're not alone in our miseries and our understandings of them, but that it's something we all share and that the causes are something we have in common.

@aburka @gwynnion You mean like finding out how kids kill themselves over social media, how Facebook watched a million pedophiles a day talk to children and did nothing, that kind of bad stuff? Or we're blaming the suicides of children on the Iran war now? I agree it's important to protect the rights of Facebook to market to children, the S&P 500 depends on it.

Don't let some dead kids get in your way. We "need" social media, it gave us Trump, they stole all our data and use it for things like Brexit - but please, we should protect it.

If our phones delivered happy news, if kids felt loved and safe and had someplace else to be, do you still think phones would be the problem?

"Oh, no, the algorithm is addictive because it makes them feel good about themselves."

@JoeHenzi @aburka @gwynnion No-one here wants kids to kill themselves. No-one here gives a damn about Facebook. What we want is some evidence that turning even more personal information over to Facebook will stop kids killing themselves.

@rupert @aburka @gwynnion Again, never advocated to turn over information to Facebook.

                    >What we want is some evidence that turning even more personal information over to Facebook will stop kids killing themselves.

Them being on it was getting them killed - you want MORE evidence, more dead bodies? Not sure what you're asking for here... they already went to court, they were found guilty, there is evidence.

Forget uploading your ID - that's the false choice here. If it wasn't harmful, if it didn't exist, we'd not be talking about IDs.

"No on here" is weird, there are trolls here, Nazi instances, CSAM on Fedi sites too. This isn't exempt.

I like how in a thread about how social media is great and healthy and not bad for anyone we didn't discuss that topic but blocked people who pointed to evidence that wasn't true. It's almost as if social media is bad no matter the platform because humans shouldn't have it.

@JoeHenzi @aburka @gwynnion I'm old enough to remember when people tried to ban some styles of music because if you played it backwards it contained messages that told kids to kill themselves.

@rupert @aburka @gwynnion sigh - there is a difference, now there are dead kids and mountains of evidence, but look how you're brushing it off to protect your free microphone - this is healthy and fine!

EDIT: I'm also old enough. But moral enough to spot the differences. Rap lyrics weren't actively matching pedophiles up to children - social media was doing that automatically. But compare them, that's sensical, to protect the adult's right to access kids. That's what you're protecting, not access to rap records... it's "the same".

Here's what would make those stories similar: If Judas Priest documented, over and over, that they were putting lyrics into songs telling people to kill themselves and decided to NOT take them out. This is why Facebook lost in court and Judas Priest did not.

Not sure why you're old enough to remember the case, but not the outcome, the trial, the facts, the differences, that there was 1 trial for 2 kids - that Facebook has a trail of dead bodies and internal documents showing they knew it was happening and did nothing.

Yes, they are exactly the same!

@JoeHenzi @aburka @gwynnion I didn't ask for evidence that it was happening. I was asking for evidence that the proposed solution, that Meta is lobbying for, will stop it.

EDIT: To be clear, AGAIN, you're IGNORING that it's happening. 3 posts, can't once recognize social media led to their deaths, you're sole focus is on this ID thing. Basically, you are so focused on what you think you might lose here dead children do not matter. And I was worried Facebook was being immoral. Maybe it shouldn't exist at all.

What they don’t like is that the solution is active moderation, and that’s too expensive for these stupidly large platforms to make a profit off of. So, they’d rather you be sad alone than Meta have to pay someone to protect its users.
