    Well, I wish there were more people out there translating old public domain folk tales from their native languages. There are a lot of countries with _massive_ repositories of folk tales which aren't accessible to an international audience.

    Also, there are still quite a few countries and cultures out there who still have amateur oral storytelling traditions, and I wish that people in those countries would take steps to write those down and preserve them.

      @juergen_hubert There is unfortunately an idea in many oral storytelling communities that writing down a story causes it to "die." The logic says that, once written, the story must be performed in line with the written word or it will be construed as somehow "wrong."

      As a person who often takes well-known folk tales and stands them on their heads in the telling, I know better. But even my storytelling teacher repeated this idea when I was still taking classes only a few years ago.

        @KurtHohmann

        It's better to think of them as snapshots in time and space, rather than a "fixed" version.

            @Ullilust

            Ideas are easy - it's the execution that is hard to pull off.
