Cory @pluralistic Doctorow gives us #cargobike #ebike folks a nice rundown on all the fun bosch has in store for us.

worth keeping in mind as all these 'official' e-assist systems also neatly pair with your phone, all sorts of hilarity & hijinks may ensue!

& fwiw, bosch ain't the only outfit going long on enshittification.

    it's never if, merely when.

@cpm @pluralistic This summer I had to help my parents with their Specialized/Bosch e-bikes and these were a nightmare.
I had to waste 30 minutes to recover my mom's Specialized account (she isn't tech savy so the seller created it for her but she forgot tge email and password used for it) just to adjust a couple of settings on the battery power deployment curve. On top of that I found out that if you even want to sell or give away your Specialized ebike you can do it only trough an autorized reseller otherwise your identity will stay tied to the bike blocking out many features.
I fear for the day automotive manufacturers learn from this (spoiler: they're actually well into the process and they have full support from the EU since they're locking down their stuff "for our own good").

Oof, I have a bosch motor on my canondale, it does not have any phone app option.

        I'm so happy about that!

I hope when time comes to replace the bike, I can get another dumb e-bike. I don't need my bike spying on me.

@emilianosandri @cpm @pluralistic remember #bosch wrote the code for #VW to cheat on emissions #dieselgate

Most e-bikes on the market today are built with unique and proprietary parts. They are drifting farther towards unrepairable future waste. There needs to be affordable easy conversion options, there is no shortage of suitable bikes laying around. Bikes with near infinite parts operability. Bikes are the mechanical #fediverse

            @MCDuncanLab
most of existing/legacy bosch (other) still use good ole CANbus for talking with the various bits

I presume the newer does as well, with extra sauce

this canbus stuff is pretty well grokked by a lot of folks, and yes 'Tuners' have fun with it.

            once the warrantee is over?
            it's over.

@woodenmachines @cpm @pluralistic This, if we keep going down this road I imagine piles of "sustainable" eBikes and eScooters rotting in dumpsters around the world just because repair is gatekept with some arbitrary software restriction.

@cpm @MCDuncanLab @pluralistic Great to know, sooner or later I might learn the basic of the CANbus protocol myself. I'd love to know more about vehicle electronics and eBike might be a relatively cheap ways to get my hands dirty.

Well, that post made no sense to me, but I'm glad emiliano found it interesting.

@woodenmachines @emilianosandri @cpm @pluralistic Plain mechanical bikes are still one of the pinnacles of interop.

Recently I assembled my new bike by buying part by part. Very little research and I ended up with no problems of incompatibility, despite basically every part being of a different brand altogether. Ebikes have similar potential.

But of course there is always the push for proprietary parts.
