    #WritersCoffeeClub 26 August. What conflicts have you experienced because of your writing?

    Well, some weeks ago there was this crusading atheist who ranted at me at length for not decrying the concept of "souls" as falsehood in the context of discussing German folk tales, and who finally stooped to personal insults.

    _That_ was annoying.

      @juergen_hubert You can't atheist your way through the folklore of an era in which atheism pretty much didn't exist.

      Writing out religion from history is just as bizarre as writing out POCs in Europe before 1700.

      Some people are just very frustrating. Sorry you had to deal with that.

        @lbheuschkel

        Well, it did exist in some intellectual circles in the cities, but it was notably absent in the mindscape of the rural peasantry of 19th century Germany.

        And to understand folk tales, you need to understand the mindset of the people telling them. While I do have plenty of scathing criticisms for _some_ of their beliefs, base beliefs in Christianity and souls is not among them.
