@wanderingprofessor no algorithm so it takes time to gradually find your people out in the mastodon wilds, but stick around and you’ll be rewarded handsomely. it’s the best social media platform of all time
@cultdev Thank you! Good to know, I am still trying to wrap my head around it but love that posts are not algorithmically served up! Feels more like what a social network is supposed to be.

Welcome!
Given your use of hashtags, you seem to be well set up, but just in case you seek more info how things work here, I recommend the unofficial Fediverse guide https://fedi.tips .
They also run the account @ FediTips @ social.growyourown.services .
Re: your DIY: There's sth called # MakersHour where people chat about their makes based on questions that change weekly. If you're into such exchanges, here's the post for today https://toot.community/@MakersHour@cupoftea.social/115932504627371536
Enjoy!
@proscience Awesome I will follow #MakersHour and the tips. Thanks for the help and welcome.

@wanderingprofessor does paleoclimatology mean diatom analysis from ice and mud cores and all that? I was skint so couldn’t carry on but would have liked to do my masters in that stuff way back when.

@GlitchGhost thank you!

#introduction I'm new to the #fediverse brought here from the hard fork podcast. Only been here a day and I'm loving it. I'm a #professor of #geography my research interests include #climate and #weather. My passion is teaching students and advising graduate student theses. If you need any help or advice writing or publishing your thesis reach out. My biggest hobby is adventure #motorcycling but more recently I've had my hands full with our two kids so I do a lot of #diy and #baking
@wanderingprofessor welcome to the Fediverse

@JimmyB You got it! Those are some proxy records we can use as stand-ins for climate records. I use tree-rings to look back on past droughts going back 2,000+ yrs. Ice cores go back much further 800,000 to 1 million+ yrs. Sediment goes back 10,000 to 100,000+ yrs but the temporal resolution of ice and sediment is not annual. The annual or even subannual (trees actually put on two types of rings a year) is why I like dendrochronology so much. I mostly teach now and try to publish with students
