"Abolish ICE" is an increasingly mainstream and extremely correct position.

Abolish ICE Before They Kill Again, Impeach Trump & Noem Before They Incite More Murder

Renee Nicole Good was a 37-year-old award-winning poet, a mother of a six-year-old, and a wife who had recently moved to Minneapolis. That all ended yesterday when a masked ICE agent murdered her in broad daylight, shooting her multiple times at close range in the head. She had stuffed animal toys in the glove boxโ€ฆ

      @evacide
I want way more than impeachment. This is happening because feckless democrats let everything Trump and his minions did last time slide. Trump, Noem, and all the rest at the top need to be in prison - because they have broken our laws and violated our Constitution and because if we don't they (#GOP) will continue to be emboldened to continue to break our laws and violate our Constitution.
And honestly, it is past time to abolish and ban the #GOP. Other countries have banned political parties that were a threat to their existence and I believe the entire @GOP has clearly proven they are a threat to our country's existence.

@evacide Techdirt's been a consistent critic of ICE, though during the Obama years they focused more on ICE's abuse of copyright enforcement than its abuse of people with brown skin.

Tim Cushing's their main guy covering abusive behavior by law enforcement; here's the first Trump-era post I can find about ICE abusing immigrants, from May 2017:

ICE Using Stingrays To Track Down Immigrants Because Of Course It Is

As information about police use of cell tower spoofers began leaking out, those who had kept the public (including defendants, judges, and even some prosecutors) out of the loop began defending their use of domesticated military technology. They said pay no attention to the possible civil liberties violations. Just think of all the good they'reโ€ฆ

First example I can find of them using the phrase "abolish ICE" is from 2024, but I think the sentiment was always there.

@evacide I remember reading a lot of news about Google employees' internal protests against contracts with ICE and DHS, I think, 10+ years ago, deeply surprised that such talented and lucky software people escalate such seemingly nuanced issues out of their professional lane (as perceived by foreigner).

@autkin ICE and DHS rely on tools built by the tech industry, an industry where immigrants are a significant and essential part of the labor force. This is very much in their lane.

@autkin ICE and DHS rely on tools built by the tech industry, an industry where immigrants are a significant and essential part of the labor force. This is very much in their lane.

@OliviaVespera To be clear, I am now and have always been a Mike Masnick fangirl. I am very impressed with the way that Techdirt has stepped up to meet this moment, especially when so many mainstream publications have not.

But it is interesting that wired magazine, which I never considered way back in the day to do the kind of reporting theyโ€™ve done quite a lot seem to be filling those empty shoes

No complaints with that idea. But I would not stop at the GOP but the bank rollers of the American right wing and everything about it. We can talk about the older money that laid the foundation for this right word swing the Koch network. They have been in operation since the 1970s more or less immediately after the Powell memo was published.

I consider NRx to be the ideological progeny of everything that older American wealth promoted.

@evacide i think the issue must be cut more deep.

Us citizen must abolish all Insitution and rebuild them from the gound to prevent this to appen again.

If not it's just waiting this happen again (if you manage to prevent trump from becoming president for life, because seen from here with only 2 no king in a year, it's become more and more likely).

You were voicing the comments of a fascism historian recently Jason Stanley who emigrated to Canada with his wife and children because he saw the writing on the wall. He was recently interviewed by Amanpour and Company.

He remarked that there is no going back to before times. Itโ€™s up to all of us and the rest of the world to figure out where we have to be.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @evacide Sadly now US citizen that think that everything will be good again after 2026 mid term will have to deal with a brutal return to reality, as the majority of the world see the US as the world have seen Russian since a long time (ans i a former russian), culprit that did not stop their governement, but it's worse for US as they also betrayed their core principle.
