Carney was never a good choice, he was just a less bad choice then Pierre. Pierre would’ve gladly started chopping up the country for Trump, and/or brought Musk north for a Doge north department, or something even worse. Jagmeet wasn’t realistic, and didn’t offer a great platform, in part because they conceded to the libs before it even got rollin just to try and stop the cons. Carney is a staunch neo-liberal, with a banker background to boot. Him being pro-market and pro-international business (ie. non canadian business) isn’t ‘new’ for him. Him throwing small businesses under the bus is totally on brand. But every party toted the same general neo-liberal approach, without any pushes for drastic overhauls of existing norms that would’ve been needed if we were to actually respond to what’s going on. We needed a more drastic shift away from the market-based rules, because the US had thrown out the rule book / started overtly breaking them on a routine basis – Carney, and all the rest, are still sticking to those old rules hoping things will blow over. Opening markets and acting like its business as usual granting access / control to US interests because “business!”, while the US president openly says they’ll be selling deficient military hardware to their allies cause “maybe they wont be allies for long”. Hell, the US bailed after like half a day at the G7, and spent most of that time whining about why Russia wasn’t included… if you think the status quo is still in the room… And its unlikely that govt will listen to feedback between elections. Especially if you’re unfortunate enough to be from a riding that ALWAYS votes one way or another, as many of us are, because why would politicians even bother listening to your feedback if the vote is pre-determined in your area already? Alberta can be given pipelines left right and center, they’ll still vote conservative. Parts of Vancouver can be completely ignored for decades because they always vote NDP.

The economic troubles are immigration. What happens is you have QE and 0% interest rates, to deal with Covid, then you have a labor shortage and “quiet quitting”; as per the phillips curve in economics where inflation and employment are inversely coorelated. Then you have mass immigration to fill the temporary QE induced labor shortage. Then you have the BoC raising interest rates, even more so than expected given Trumps tariffs. Then you have a reversion to the mean for employment, and a lot more workers that can no longer be absorbed. So its all excess immigration. We arent meant to drastically distort the market like this to fill temporary lulls or highs in the economy, to hide falling GDP growth and then losing the election. I’m not a mustached villain, I simply have a single mom sister who can barely get by as an education assistant and think what we did is despicable.

are more likely to fall into the lower income groups and less likely to be among employees making over $100,000 a year. I’d like actual statistics presented in a sane way. Obviously if white people are predominant then it is more likely they would be one of the people making 100k or more, just as they will be more likely to be depressed with their job or suffer a fatal car accident from exhaustion.

The statement says clinical evidence shows that once a patient has declined in motor skills and language functions by a certain amount, the drug is no longer a benefit in slowing the progression of the disease. Sounds reasonable

Car free on the day with the least transit service and what little there is randomly gets delayed or cancelled without notice. Great idea! Seriously, as someone who exclusively uses transit, the weekend service is infuriating and basically unusable if you’re under any sort of time pressure. You show up at a bus station, transit app says the next one is in 30 minutes when it would be 5-10 minutes on weekdays. So you resign yourself to a 30 minute wait only for the bus to not show up with zero announcements, even though they’re pretty good at notifying you of these things on weekdays. So now you have to wait for the next one in an hour, which might not show up either, and when it does, it’s packed to the brim because it’s carrying three buses worth of passengers and the driver puts on the “sorry bus full” sign and refuses to let you on even when several people get off at the same stop. It’s genuinely like they want you to drive on the weekend. Calling it now: when car free Sundays inevitably flop because no one wants to bother with the shitty weekend transit, city council will go “see? car free streets never work!” And it will be used to shoot down every subsequent car free initiative.

Claire Bell, the three-year-old missing since Sunday, has been found alive in Ontario. A drone spotted Claire by the side of Highway 417 near St. Albert, Ont., about 150 kilometres west of Montreal, just after 3 p.m., according to Quebec provincial police. She was alone but seemed healthy. Ontario Provincial Police found the girl. “Obviously we’re relieved she was found,” Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Éloïse Cossette told reporters. “This is the best possible outcome.” Police are taking care of her and ensuring she has food and water, Cossette added. Ontario and Quebec provincial police will hold a joint news conference later Wednesday afternoon to provide more details, she said.

If the populace of voters can’t remember anything that happened just a couple years ago, I don’t think we can expect them to be forward thinking either. There’s little incentive for politicians to make the hard, unpopular, long-term decisions that we need to battle climate change and other challenges.

Rhetorical question here … why aren’t the current task force members named here? I mean they should be, the same as any physician who’s ignored acience and caused the deaths of an unknown number of women.

Oh, I wasn’t suspecting the excavators of a hoax, I was suspecting the people who put the thing there in the 18th century. There were a whole series of “Vikings in the Americas” hoaxes in (mostly) the 19th century, although this would be early for that type of thing, and all the runestone-specific hoaxes I’m aware of were down in the States. The choice of runes for this carving was almost certainly deliberate—by the 18th century, the Latin alphabet would have been dominant in most of Scandinavia—but there’s no way of telling whether it was intended to be deceptive.

The Conservatives need a new direction and a new leader, unless they want to be the government in waiting, waiting and waiting. They might actually prefer not being in charge. It’s easier to complain than it is to govern.
