Epic CEO Tim Sweeney takes yet another victory lap after Apple's latest appeal fails: 'The long national nightmare of the Apple tax is ended'

I’m so happy this other large company which wants to embed itself as a storefront and soak up fees won against the other large company which was already doing it.
Like, genuinely I am, but Epic isn’t doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. Epic/Sweeney is mostly sad they didn’t have the monopoly first.
Now Epic can finally install their own payment system, bypassing Apple’s parental controls, and little Timmy can just enter the details from mommy’s credit card when Epic gets him addicted to
gamblingloot boxes.Such a win for consumers.

Okay now he should be able to afford developers to make all their games on Epic SteamDeck-compatible, right?
Epic literally cannot even bother, they handed Linux to valve on a golden platter
-
do you think Apple is the only highly successful company in the world?
No just one of the most profitable in the world.
There’s tons of others… like Epic.
Epic is not “successful”, by any standard.
that’s the first step to actually knowing what the hell you’re talking about
I know exactly what I’m talking about. I just don’t know what you’re talking about.
Epic is not successful? They’re a privately held company with a valuation of like $32 billion. They are the developers of Fortnite, and like 75% of all console/PC video games are built in their engine.
I guess my question is how the fuck do you define successful then?

Steam takes just as big a cut as Apple
But UE already supports Linux export and when Epic bought EAC the first thing they did was give it Linux support so they have already done what you asked
Unless you’re talking about Fortnite
Yes, Steam takes a cut as well. But the crux of the argument is the monopoly part. You can distribute your game outside of steam - on other app stores, or sell it directly to customers if you want. On iOS, there is literally no other distribution channel. You have to pay Apple and use their thing. That’s the difference.

Tim, you're gonna make Tim Cook retire early.

Too bad (for him) Epic is still trash.

Apple v Epic is like the Trump-Elon fight. Apple, like Trump, does more and lasting damage. Sweeny, like Elon, is somehow even more hate-able.
I don’t want either side to win, I want both sides to lose.

Thought Epic isn’t entirely the good guy, this is great news for them and everyone else who’s been under Apples oppressive rules

why is epic trash? I mean yes, sweeney sucks balls, but why EPIC trash?

ask any game dev if they’re happy Epic won this battle? If they say no then they’ve never tried to release a game on a marketplace. This is a huge win for developers.

I am a dev. I said I’m glad they won. Epic still sucks, though.

so am i. And I’ll agree epic sucks in some ways, sweeney in more, but they also provide a relatively awesome toolset. i think epic has gotten a lot of undue hate just for having a marketplace seperate from steam - but steam has been exploiting devs for a long ass time too.

We have laws to protect children, no other companies: we need laws that hit hard companies that don’t respect people (and other companies)'s rights.

Well. Being profitable would be a good start.

We have laws to protect children
Hahaha, good one.
we need laws that hit hard companies that don’t respect people (and other companies)'s rights.
In the US? That’s not going to happen. The US is run by corporations.

“… Long national nightmare…”. I think this guy likes his hyperbole. Trump, DOGE, and the rest of the current government? National nightmare. Russia attempting to invade Ukraine? National nightmare. Israel killing thousands of children in a bid to wipe out an entire populace? NATIONAL NIGHTMARE. This guy needs to visit reality more often.

That’s the legal argument
The person I replied to was asking if Epic would port everyone’s game to Linux because of the IOS cost savings, when Steam takes the same cut it actually is all that matters in that argument

It’s lacking s bunch of basic functionality that, for example, stream has. Even Epic itself admitted that it’s not great.
Epic Games Launcher Is Indeed Clunky, Admits Epic's Tim Sweeney
Epic founder, president, and largest shareholder Tim Sweeney admitted that the Epic Games Launcher is indeed clunky, as the users say.

That was a reference to AOC making fun of Trump and Elon
