#Trans folx in #Kansas given 1 day to surrender their (now invalid) IDs and driver's licenses to the state. As of tomorrow (Thursday), driving while trans is a class-B misdemeanor ($1000 fine and up to 6 months in jail).

The zero-grace-period execution means driving to turn in your license is a crime.

Oh yeah, this bill also enacted a bathroom bounty program allowing private individuals to sue trans folx for using the restroom.

@weirdone @alice I can’t understand how this will work because in eg. a traffic stop the cop will see a completely different person to that in the ID. Surely the whole purpose of ID is to prove you are who you say you are and if your ID says you’re a man and you look like a woman (or vice versa), it no longer serves any practical purpose. If you are a trans man or a trans woman, then your ID should reflect that, otherwise it’s completely useless.

@peterbrown @weirdone @alice This isn't about utility. If it were they'd be combatting their piss poor public health, education system, homelessness, poverty, etc etc. This is about targetting a group of people and saying you have the solution to 'make them go away'. I agree though, it kind of makes the ID useless.

@B_Bird @alice fascism promises things it cannot do; so it has to deliver on "the distractions"

There were a lot of German Jews who wouldn't believe the fascists could do what they did. Don't be there when it's too late to leave.

@alice Why is it that conservative forces are always so fixated on other people's genitals?

@phl @alice I've always assumed it's because it would be diplomatically awkward to do otherwise.

Yeah, pretty much. German political leaders always stressed the "Transatlantic Friendship/Alliance", and it would be awkward to admit that this now belongs on the dung heap of history.

And this doesn't even count the European political leaders who were extruded from the American business machine, such as our own Friedrich #Merz (a #Blackrock veteran).

Personally, I would recommend Americans who need to escape to Europe to move there via a student visa. Those are much easier to get, and you will have a much better status - you can get part-time jobs with them.

the genitals are a pretext - it's about a marginalised group that they think can't defend itself or have others step in to defend them.

@Savvyhomestead No, the American system protects people of means who are well connected to the in-group. Miss Nancy is going to be okay, despite selling his soul a decade ago. He'll die in disgrace and be remembered as a gutless traitor, but he won't suffer for his moral crimes before he dies.

@jabgoe2089 In this case, it's about the general human obsession with social gender, which the Western world has equated to biological sex for several centuries now. As gender is neurological, it cannot be tested at birth, so your Sex Assigned At Birth is based entirely on (limited) biological evidence. Many people, such as the weirdo Xtians who run Kansas, believe that sex and gender are the same thing, so what a doctor saw twixt your nethers at birth is Who and What You Are, no backsies.

@ATLeagle Unfortunately, it's worse than that. You can also do time under this rule. And this can escalate fast, because 1st ofc = 90 days suspension, and how will you get around in that time? Violate that, and you face more serious consequences.

Kansas gave people almost no warning about this, and will impose real penalties starting TODAY.

@swaldman @alice This would only list Kansas as unsafe. You'd have to run out of all "safe" states before they'd start accepting asylum claims from trans USians with a chance of success. Atm even Palestine or Syria aren't places where you can get guaranteed successful asylum claims (glances at Syrian refugees currently being sent back to unsafe situations).

@starfrost Well, in Kansas, maybe. We'll see how far it goes. But Kansas already has a very long track record of this kind of BS. My advice to anyone there, even 10 years ago, would be to just leave if you can. Kansas doesn't seem likely to get better any time soon, and there are better places to live.

                                    Oh, a trans tax.

Years ago I'd laugh at this as a somewhat conservative guy but I try to be better.

If I see a lifestyle choice I don't agree with, I always ask myself if I'm willing to disown my future kid for the same choice. If I'm not willing to disown and cut ties, then I think it's fair that the choice be left alone.

Imagine implementing a Christian tax, or straight tax, or <insert totally normal thing> tax.

                                    You get the point.

@retrimental I'm not sure how you're getting 'tax' out of this. Forfeiture (the legal term for payment of a fine) is the very least of the potential consequences here. 1st offence is also 90 days suspension, and if you violate that it's minimum 5 days in jail. They can also jail you for this at any level. A 'tax' would be quaint next to that.

@alice wait a minute, let me get this straight, the Pedophiles are at war with queer folx? It legal to sexually abuse children but illegal to drive a car based on a deviation from birth gender.

@alice ....and yet European countries still (so far as I understand it) refuse asylum claims on the basis that "The USA is a Safe Country".

@swaldman Yeah, that's a real problem. And you'd expect Western European countries, if any, to be alert to this. I, too, wonder how much longer it will take for them to come around. I think most of them have are waiting for each other to make the first move.

@swaldman @alice I honestly don't get why we still list the US as "safe to travel" in the travel advisories either.

@phl Outdated info, maybe. Most public guides are based on info from no less than 1-2 years old. 2 years ago, I would have agreed. Today, I'm repeatedly telling people to stay away from here, and if they're here to get out if they can.
