Naturalists are predominantly elderly. Is this because they were socialised as children in a time when there was a greater abundance and variety of wildlife and were more free to roam or is it simply that in retirement they have time to let their interest flower?If the former, we are in danger of seeing a collapse in data gathering for anything other than birds and butterflies, putting the natural world in greater danger.If it is just a stage of life thing, there will be steady replacement and data will continue to flow.Any thoughts?#insects #entomology #biodiversity #birds #wildlife

I always mesh bag a sunflower head or two so I have seeds for next year, but then the rest of the seeds are free picking for the birds! This is the time of year we get American goldfinches, they LOVE snacking straight on the flowers. #aunflowers #birds #gardening

The male and female Asian Fairy-Bluebird (Irena puella) spotted at Thomson Nature Park, Singapore on 17 Aug 2025. There is a lot of wildlife in my neighborhood, especially birds. We have all sorts of birds of prey, but until now, I have only ever seen turkey vultures in the sky. I saw this one eating roadkill while walking my dog. A passing car spooked it and it flew up to a nearby garage, which is where I took this picture with my iPhone (luckily my dog ignores almost all wildlife).#Birds #Vultures #Wildlife #Nature

Nature is amazing. I was driving to Culver’s this evening and there were a trio of sandhill cranes looking for food on the side of the road. One sauntered out into the street (a 4-lane stroad btw), stopped eastbound traffic, took a massive shit, and then sauntered back.
