We knew this was coming, but now the clock is running. From Privacy International:

"Yesterday the Trump Administration announced a proposed change in policy for travellers to the U.S. It applies to the powers of data collection by the Customs and Border Police (CBP)."

"If the proposed changes are adopted after the 60-day consultation, then millions of travellers to the U.S. will be forced to use a U.S. government mobile phone app, submit their social media from the last five years and email addresses used in the last ten years, including of family members. They’re also proposing the collection of DNA."

PI linked to and summarized a Federal Register entry describing the proposed requirements:

-All visitors must submit ‘their social media from the last 5 years’

-ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) applications will include ‘high value data fields’, ‘when feasible’
‘telephone numbers used in the last five years’
-‘email addresses used in the last ten years’
-‘family number telephone numbers (sic) used in the last five years’
-biometrics – face, fingerprint, DNA, and iris
-business telephone numbers used in the last five years
-business email addresses used in the last ten years.

@AAKL @briankrebs If the German football federation decides to either boycott the WC entirely or boycott matches in the US the rest of Europe will do the same. Mexico and Canada can handle the extra matches and tourists. FIFA can adjust quickly to cut the US out. The US matches will have low ranked teams playing in near empty stadiums.

It seems there's _always_ something else at play, some other 'plan' underneath and behind whatever it is that's stated at face value, so this makes sense in that context.

Being in control isn't one directional, it's about every direction all at once, and when there's a built-in byproduct in some 'new rule' to guarantee even more control, they'll use it, exploit it, and look for another dozen offshoots to cement even more control.

It's Palantir and other AI tech bros who are data hungry for more data-inaccessible correlations

          Intelligence agencies hope for intel.

Politicians hope for leverage against any and all

The US wants to chose their politicians in any nation by manufacturing consent with AI and micromanagement.

I feel for anyone in the travel, tourism and hospitality industries, which make up ~ 10M jobs and ~ 3 percent of the nation's GDP. From the U.S. International Trade Administration (trade.gov)

"Inbound international travel to the United States plays a vital role in the Nation’s economy and promotes cultural exchange and understanding. Travel and tourism is the largest single services export for the United States, accounting for 22 percent of the country’s services exports and 7 percent of all exports in 2023. The travel and tourism industry contributed $2.3 trillion to the U.S. economy in 2022 (2.97 percent of the country’s GDP), supporting 9.5 million jobs."

@briankrebs Apart from tourism, this is completely counter to GDPR, and any international company that has operations in the US is not going to send employees over. They may reconsider investing in the US. This is so short-sighted and heavy handed, typical of this "Administration".

@briankrebs Luckily I don't have to, and I don't want to, go to the US in the near future.

But there may be lots of people who either must or want to go there, for one reason or another. Good luck to them!

@briankrebs I wouldn't travel there if someone paid me for it. Even if my employer requested I travel to the US, I wouldn't do it. Nobody can make me provide that kind of private data to go on a business trip, nope.

@briankrebs "Millions of travellers to the US will go elsewhere" is how I read it. And the rules will start applying right before the expected influx of the FIFA World Corrup spectators and teams! Something tells me only the matches in Mexico and Canada will have people in the stadiums…

@jmjm I hope we won't stoop to MAGA level. The problem is not in US travellers, the problem is a fascist administration.

I'd say travel bans bans for Orange, his cabinet, his family, his techbros and everybody otherwise connected to him.

Of course they could scrape the content for each social media account for each visitor’s application. It’s more likely they’ll seek direct access to the platforms’ databases, or use third-party firms who can do this for them.”
