Bring back the website with the message board attached for fans of whatever is going on there. Let’s start over.I'm not disagreeing, but feel I should point out message boards require moderation and policies; same as any social media.
Meaning they can work when run by dedicated volunteers, but for-profit companies see them as cost-centers and eventually shut them down after they first cut moderation headcount and then let them turn into sewers.

Lemmy is probably the closest Fediverse version of a message board. You might want to look at it.

Message board fans should take a look at @nodebb . The newest version (4.0.x) federates, so you can boost fedi posts into the forum, follow subforums and respond to threads from masto/friendica/whatever.They have a long history as a message board, so that part is really solid. The fedi part is still under development, but already very useful.

Engaging with federated content in a classical message board has been an absolute trip. This is admittedly kind of weird, but nodeBB v4 actually takes my breath away sometimes, and feels like magic.
I can't imagine what it's going to be like once the ActivityPub integration matures.
