End of my 4th week on #Mastodon and I really like the lack of adverts
I hate ads - can't bear TV with ads, avoid videos with ads, quickly lose interest in podcasts that have too many ads
We’ve always refused to put ads in our podcast, even after several hundred episodes. They offer us money, we say no
So I like this #fediverse - nice people, no algorithm, no ads. And you like cats! What a place!

The lack of ads is great, yeah. And the knock-on from that is the (perhaps over-sold) lack of recommendation system, since ML-based post display is usually tuned to maximize ad views, they end up filling your feed with emotionally charged engagement bait.
Without the ads, the system of being fed content you didn’t subscribe to, and the system of maximizing the emotional impact of that content, never comes to be, and the social media landscape looks wildly different.

this is way I have no shame using and advocating using an ad blocker like ublock origin or AdNauseam which is built on top of ublock origin, this is a cool ad blocker a lot of people have not heard of and they got banned of the chrome web store from what I hear https://adnauseam.io/ -

@rufustheduck I have to agree the lack of ads is bliss. I, too, have been here only just over a week, so same! But I have looked almost exclusively at cat pictures and maybe I need to branch out a bit?
