#Trans folx in #Kansas given 1 day to surrender their (now invalid) IDs and driver's licenses to the state. As of tomorrow (Thursday), driving while trans is a class-B misdemeanor ($1000 fine and up to 6 months in jail).

The zero-grace-period execution means driving to turn in your license is a crime.

Oh yeah, this bill also enacted a bathroom bounty program allowing private individuals to sue trans folx for using the restroom.

As a journalist once titled a book: "What's the matter with Kansas?"

Our red states brethren are sick puppies.

They still haven’t gotten all the corners of Brownback stench out. The governor vetoed this, but too many people there still vote for the Republican scum legislators who created this. The Koch(s) have big influence in Kansas.

Two of my company’s big yearly meetings are in Kansas. I’ve refused to go for over 10 years.

@swaldman @alice This would only list Kansas as unsafe. You'd have to run out of all "safe" states before they'd start accepting asylum claims from trans USians with a chance of success. Atm even Palestine or Syria aren't places where you can get guaranteed successful asylum claims (glances at Syrian refugees currently being sent back to unsafe situations).

@starfrost Well, in Kansas, maybe. We'll see how far it goes. But Kansas already has a very long track record of this kind of BS. My advice to anyone there, even 10 years ago, would be to just leave if you can. Kansas doesn't seem likely to get better any time soon, and there are better places to live.

              Oh, a trans tax.

Years ago I'd laugh at this as a somewhat conservative guy but I try to be better.

If I see a lifestyle choice I don't agree with, I always ask myself if I'm willing to disown my future kid for the same choice. If I'm not willing to disown and cut ties, then I think it's fair that the choice be left alone.

Imagine implementing a Christian tax, or straight tax, or <insert totally normal thing> tax.

              You get the point.

@retrimental I'm not sure how you're getting 'tax' out of this. Forfeiture (the legal term for payment of a fine) is the very least of the potential consequences here. 1st offence is also 90 days suspension, and if you violate that it's minimum 5 days in jail. They can also jail you for this at any level. A 'tax' would be quaint next to that.

@swaldman Yeah, that's a real problem. And you'd expect Western European countries, if any, to be alert to this. I, too, wonder how much longer it will take for them to come around. I think most of them have are waiting for each other to make the first move.

@phl Outdated info, maybe. Most public guides are based on info from no less than 1-2 years old. 2 years ago, I would have agreed. Today, I'm repeatedly telling people to stay away from here, and if they're here to get out if they can.

I can imagine that some people's licenses may be coming up for renewal, and they want to wait for that to happen before getting a new license. If it's more than a year before renewal, I suppose they could get the license changed and renewed at the same time, paying a pro-rated amount to cover whatever time is left on the current license, plus the cost for the new one. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Their licenses were invalidated today with no grace period. Any trans person with a KS license who drives today who has changed their gender on their license to their real gender would be driving illegally. They’re being forced to change it back to their ASAB and being given no time to do so, in order to inflict as much pain as possible. The Kansas legislature is filled with evil people.

@len Right, though I'll add a very critical caveat. If you live in the US, there are comparatively safer or less safe states. But you cannot enter ANY part of the US without interacting with the same people who gunned down two of our own citizens in Minnesota. And they've already bagged a lot of visitors, and will continue to, often on little or no pretext.

DON'T COME TO THE US. It is not safe to enter our country. Stay away. For your own safety.

@weirdone @alice I can’t understand how this will work because in eg. a traffic stop the cop will see a completely different person to that in the ID. Surely the whole purpose of ID is to prove you are who you say you are and if your ID says you’re a man and you look like a woman (or vice versa), it no longer serves any practical purpose. If you are a trans man or a trans woman, then your ID should reflect that, otherwise it’s completely useless.

@peterbrown Right. But that's not its purpose. Its purpose is to shame and humiliate trans people and discourage them from being themselves anytime they're not in the privacy of their home. It's also meant to discourage voting by people they don't like.

@weirdone Under this law, any DL that has a gender marker different from your birth certificate becomes invalid TODAY. Use of it incurs a fine, and can also include jail time. It also incurs an automatic 90-day suspension, and if you violate that, a mandatory minimum 5 days in jail.

It's weird seeing all the far right "15 minute city" conspiracy theories (which claim alternatives to cars restrict people's freedom) and now the far right is specifically using cars to restrict people's freedoms.

It's like yet another accusation being a confession. All the conspiratorial lies they told about public transport being an instrument of control, they are now actually doing themselves with cars.

@FediThing This is more about the DL as personal ID, which is ubiquitous in the US. We use our DLs as ID all the time -- liquor store, club, bank, etc. This is about shaming and humiliating a disfavoured group, and making just living as hard as possible. And, ultimately, discouraging trans people from voting, where ID is also required.

@Thijs_Goverde @alice A fire our country voted to start 😞. This may be Kansas but they are only emboldened to do this because of Trump and Trump 2.0. The world wasnt great but the winds were in the right direction before this dipshit caused a wave of incel men to come out of the limp woodwork, grab for power, and fund this kind of garbage. SCOTUS would not be the conservative swamp it is now and this law would be struck down by any reasonable court system, even ithe Kansas bill became law in that alternate reality. I'm embarrassed to be from the US and all I can say is I voted against Trump in all three cycles (Clinton, Biden, Harris). Obviously, enough people were lost to reason and truth to vote this slime of a reality into existence (TWICE!!!).

My heart goes out to the trans folx in KS and other places with repressive, hateful legislatives.

@danni_storm He didn't cause it. He's the symptom, not the cause. This wasn't a coup. 77M US voters agreed with this, and most of those still do. They also elected the congressional majority that not only won't stop it, but actively supports it, and defends the corrupt federal judiciary that mostly supports it, too (many of whom they installed). This is a systemic crisis of our society with a very long history, not the crimes of one stupid old man.

@wesdym @retrimental The "tax" here is that you'll have to pay for a new license. Plus you have to take public or have someone drive you there, and the wait, it's all a tax. I can't find anything on fees via search.

Shame if the Kansas Dept of Revenue gets a lot of input--

#Trans folx in #Kansas given 1 day to surrender their (now invalid) IDs and driver's licenses to the state. As of tomorrow (Thursday), driving while trans is a class-B misdemeanor ($1000 fine and up to 6 months in jail).

The zero-grace-period execution means driving to turn in your license is a crime.

Oh yeah, this bill also enacted a bathroom bounty program allowing private individuals to sue trans folx for using the restroom.
