I don't want the #Fediverse to grow because I see "growth" as an intrinsic good.

I want the Fediverse to grow because I see commercial social media as a major threat to the long-term survival of human civilization. Thus, we need to replace it - and right now, the Fediverse seems to be the best alternative we have.

@juergen_hubert @wyatt_h_knott I absolutely agree. But I hope we can always keep the funky treehouse vibe in this corner of it even when the youth start using it

Yes. I want the Fediverse to grow because I want corporate social media to shrink.I want the Fediverse to substitute for corporate-owned, algorithmically-manipulated, antisocial media.

@juergen_hubert Leaving corporate social media for Mastodon has been enormously helpful for my mental health. I do my best to get others I know to move over here.

Annelies Kamran, Ph.D. The funky treehhouse comes from trying to build distributed social media in a way that prioritizes the distributed element. Too much of the focus has been on emulating centralized systems, making the federation element seem like a meaningless and superfluous complication of something else the big platforms have seemingly figured out.
We need to make this a place that has a raison d’etra other than “we didn’t go to BlueSky” or “too edgy for Reddit”. That reason is smaller, more focused communities where you can actually talk to real, recognizable people, while also not missing out on the silly drama of the wider network.

@juergen_hubert Meta spent 8 BILLION dollars on the metaverse and then abandoned it. I think we can do better!
