Okay, some really bad news but also a suggestion for a way forward.

The Guppe groups domain name was sold by their registrar before they could renew it. This means all Guppe groups are broken, and their web addresses point to a spam blog

However, there is another group provider called FediGroups, you can find out more on their site:

FediGroups has features that Guppe never had, including private groups.

️ More scam posts are spreading lies! (see attached screenshot below)

To set the record straight:
- You do not need to verify on Mastodon
- No legitimate Mastodon admin will ever demand you verify
- No legitimate Mastodon admin will ever ask for your bank card details
- There are no monetisation features on Mastodon
- There are no extra features for verified accounts on Mastodon

If you see a scam post, click ⋯ on the scam post, then "Report", and select the option to forward the report too.

️ Important headsup if you are on the server mastodon.cloud:

Mastodon.cloud no longer seems to be moderated. Its admin account hasn't posted since Feb 2023, its code of conduct is blank and there are vile racists posting from there. The racists have been reported many times but their accounts are still active.

Because of this, other server admins are starting to block mastodon.cloud completely.

️ If you see a post or DM saying "your account is currently suspended for verification purposes", do NOT click on the link. It is a scam.

Fediverse servers do not ask people to verify their identity. There is an optional self-verification system, but that's just for those who want to use it. No one is ever asked to do it.

If you are in ANY doubt about ANY official-looking message, contact your own server's admin directly using their public email address on your server's website's "About" page.

Boosting is really important on the Fediverse because it makes whatever you boost federate to the entire servers of all your followers. A boosted public post appears on your followers' timelines, but also becomes searchable to everyone on the servers of your followers.

Instead of an algorithm, the Fediverse relies on human beings sharing stuff they find interesting. This process creates a wonderful chain of discovery.

Trump's media org stole Mastodon's software code in order to build their own centralised platform.

I wouldn't personally count them as part of Mastodon.

Bluesky are openly welcoming, verifying and hosting accounts of prominent far right politicians. Trump's VP Vance is now on Bluesky:

More : Bluesky is centralised, run by a for-profit corporation, its CEO has blockchain background, it is partly owned by VCs & Blockchain Capital.

Bluesky are going down exactly the same Nazi Bar path as Twitter.

You don't need to use your real name on the Fediverse. It is totally fine to use a nickname or made up name, as long as you're not impersonating someone else.

You also don't need to use a photo if you don't want to. You can put a picture of something else on your profile, or don't have a picture at all. (Many blind users have no image on their profile, for example.)

The only info you need to give when you sign up is an email address, and only your server's admin sees this.

Ah, okay, that's not supposed to happen.

It's possible that your server has run out of translation requests on the service they use, or it's possible that there's some kind of glitch.

You don't need to use weird spellings or algospeak for any topics on the Fediverse ("unalived", "seggs" etc). There is no automated moderation or algorithm on here, moderation happens entirely through human beings and posts are shown in chronological order.

In fact it's better that you use the correct spellings for difficult topics so that people with genuine traumas related to them can filter them more easily.
