@yon@sakurajima.moe Like many things I read, they may not necessarily change my views, but they color the discussion that I have with myself. I also generally care for lay reviews far more than professional ones. There is something about becoming a 'game journalist' or a 'professional gamer' that makes one far more jaded than is useful for me.

@yon@sakurajima.moe It’s especially odd since it seems most of them can’t pronounce it quite right, given it has one of those standalone hard “D” sounds that doesn't seem to exist in Japanese. It’s always “Loy-dough”

@yon@sakurajima.moe I definitely understand why you would have gotten upset at that “ending” though ​​I guess I don’t feel any way about it. This show has squandered a lot of its potential with a milquetoast protagonist and weakness in embracing its concept. It’s just a poor man’s Overlord. It filled time without being offensive but that’s about it to me.

@yon@sakurajima.moe It's not really building, but I've been playing Little Witch in the Woods, which is on the verge of getting a full release. It's decently chill and pretty cute.There are quests, and timed quests (fill order by Sunday, and such), but failing them doesn't have consequence. You basically just run around, collect ingredients and things, and make potions to sell and advance to the next area, which advances the loop. In that sense its a little boring, but I still enjoy it as a relaxing game.

@yon@sakurajima.moe A lot of authors don’t really intellectually engage with the trope. It’s often just a crutch. Partially for self-insert, and partially so that their character, in a foreign world, can remain Japanese and free of anachronisms. There’s also a deep vein of nationalism there - glorifying in superior Japanese culture in the middle of a bunch of backwater barbarians is a mainstay of the genre.

@yon@sakurajima.moe I think people would be surprised by how often the sequel of a game is someone’s first entry. People skip entries all the time. Time also has a way of eroding skill. Just because I kicked ass at Foo 1 does not mean I remember how to play it 7 years later. I also probably formed my pleasant memories of the first game at the difficulty curve it presented. If you change the difficulty curve significantly, you are asking me to re-evaluate my experience. Which can be fine, but you may not like my answer to a question after changing the environment you ask it in. Maybe a “don’t fix what wasn’t broken”. I assume we’re also quietly talking about Silksong because that’s what’s got people asking these things now. I’ll admit I skilled out of HK. I got about 2/3 through the game and the energy of effort to ‘git Gud’ outweighed the payout so I dropped it. I still liked what I played so I was considering buying the sequel. However, hearing that it is even more punishing has dissuaded me from buying it. I am not a gaming masochist.

@yon@sakurajima.moe Why make a recap show at the tail end of a season?Historically, this is the sign of a production struggling for budget/time. The recap can be spliced together for pennies in no time, and it will technically fill a TV slot, thus fulfilling contract obligations. Which is too bad. I've read the light novels after seeing the show and I really like this series.

@yon@sakurajima.moe I sorta wish they wouldn't bother. It often feels out of place or forced.But Japanese fantasy is sorta a strange beast to begin with. Japanese fantasy seems like a giant hodgepodge of era influences, often times as much fairytale european as like, high middle ages, with a very Japanese expectation of high bureaucracy and tidiness.

@yon@sakurajima.moe the only reason to argue online is if you know you have an audience. You can win the audience, but yeah that’s it. It’s not too different in person. Once someone gets defensive, you’ve pretty much lost them. If you’re lucky they’ll go home and stew and maybe realize you were right. I’ve always found the real way to sway people is to ensure they never realize that they’re in an argument. “I agree but here’s why I don't” works better than people think.

@yon@sakurajima.moe it blows my mind that there are legitimate monarchists out there, who just ignore literal millennias Worth of “this is an awful system” data. I kinda blame fantasy literature. The king in those stories is so often a good dude, where an inbred megalomaniac manchild would be a more historically accurate depiction.

@yon@sakurajima.moe You’re kind of overlooking the fact that we, too, are moving through space, and doing so at the same speed as the Earth’s surface. So, even if you were freed from the confines of gravity, you would still be moving laterally at the same speed as the ground. And so would any device or portal you were utilising. There’s no reason to treat the timd travel device as stationary in space. And that’s ignoring the fact that “stationary” is an inherently relative term. You always measure velocity relative to a reference point, and the universe has no universal standard for this. There is no background, stationary coordinate system underpinning space. The question of where Earth was yesterday is totally meaningless without pointint to some other object in space.

@yon@sakurajima.moe I feel that with most anime villains, there is something usually “wrong” with them. Very rarely do see a villain who just has a different set of priorities than the hero or is deeply sympathetic. They’re most often sociopaths, petty tyrants, psychos, or morally unsound. I think that’s why you get so many of these batmanesque Joker villains.
