Voting like this is a bit of a dark pattern, though. Especially downvotes. They come from places where the platform owners want to download the responsibility of community management to the community itself. This has a nasty tendency to silence valid criticism while simultaniously supporting brigading behaviour. At the very least, we should be having serious, design-focused discussions about eliminating or highly restricting downvotes.

Most people don’t pay for services on the Internet Yeah, but we are not “most people”. I thought “we” understood if you are not paying for the product, then you are the product. I thought “we” understood that “Free software” was not a “free lunch”. And if basic talk and text service was freely provided by volunteers, they’d milk those volunteer organizations dry, too. This is also why I think we should flip the script and stop cheering admins that run “free” instances. We should stop helping admins who can not make rent and we should start telling them to start valuing their work and demand proper compensation.

@aral My suggestion for the "quick pick" list, aka a trustable server list would be an extra moderated server list for example and just pick random or in order from that instead of defaulting to .socialFor the more extensive list people can always check, but it seems like an improvement already

@OctaviaConAmore Yeah, while at first the silly placeholders made me laugh, the inconsistency means filters need 80 thousand variations to block it all, while being overly inclusive of the fuzzy red Muppet when you just dont want to hear any more about the billionaire fascist.It's not like this is X or TikTok where you gotta try and get around *official* filters. Just respect people's choices about what they have the bandwidth to engage with.
