@VisualStuart I see from other news articles that this isn't the first time ICE has swept homeless encampments to meet their quotas. It would be difficult for many homeless people to prove their citizenship, given they are so often victims of theft.
Thank goodness these folk had tribal members to vouch for them.

I presume habeas corpus petitions will be filed shortly, to find out where and on what basis ICE is detaining three US citizen Oglala Sioux.
ICE's has very limited police powers. They are restricted to immigration enforcement. They have no authority to make random stops, to detain generally, or to enter into any private space without a warrant signed by an Art. III judge.
You don't seriously expect ICE goons understanding the actual details of the status of the first nations? Their own education in these topics was likely restricted to movies in the Western genre. They are probably thinking they're "saving America from the Indians".

In my region, it wasn't GESTAPO who murdered concentration camp inmates who had managed to flee from Mauthausen in 1945, it was SS and Hitlerjugend boys and other locals.

I see your overall point, but I’d argue the enforcers have always been dumb thugs. That’s what dumb thugs are for. The leadership of the Gestapo may have been strategic thinkers, but not so much the head breakers.
Just as today, ICE is being piloted by Vought and Miller, both despicably evil creatures. Miller may be most evil, what with being a haunted Victorian doll possessed by the souls of unrepentant Nazis, but Russell Vought is pretty goddamned evil, and operating under the radar.

By contrast, the Chinook of the Pacific Northwest are not a federally recognized tribe which denies Chinook members access to federal healthcare, housing, and education benefits.
