Just finished reading the first of the John Silence stories by Algernon Blackwood, A Psychical Invasion.Totally see what's meant when I read stuff talking about Silence as a proto-Kolchak and proto-Mulder. I agree that all translation strikes a delicate balance of literal meaning accuracy versus the feel of the words versus stuff like wordplay that can get lost in literal translation.(Like the fact that my own favorite translation of Pushkin's famous novel in verse Evgeny Onegin is the Hostetter translation which livens things up with similar jokes in the text to those in the original)

So, ever since college, I've given my electronics network names based on spaceships. Right now the router is "Enterprise" and my phone is "Endeavour"The laptop was formerly "Dream Chaser" but with a switch back from Windows 10 to Linux, I figured switching away from a corporate name was called for. So it is now dubbed the "Rocinante"(The computer is 12 years old, has battery issues that require it to be plugged in, a friend laughed at how the Quixote reference fits)#Computers

Ever since I was in school I wondered about how some of my more journalistic or scholarly friends self-prompted (and I kind of hate how gen AI has co-opted the term) for pieces they wrote.My writing is pretty good, and my research skills are excellent, but picking that question on my own from the infinite list of possible questions has always boggled me.In my day work, whatever issues I spot in a case prompt research for motions, but like law review just picks an argument...#writing
