@trumpet @statsguy I never considered buying a blue tick on Twitter. I wouldn’t pay for any social media. But I have donated to my server costs. I appreciate the regular people who create this “platform” and moderate it. Sending some fiscal love back is a great yearly tradition to have. Happy Fediversary

In the past, I have frequently mentioned how easy it is to move from one #Mastodon instance to another. I have done so twice in the past, and I generally recommend that people use that feature to get away from the big instances (such as Mastodon.social) and to one of the smaller ones so that the #Fediverse is more "spread out".However, there are always some people who object to this, noting that while you can migrate your follows, followers, bookmarks, blocks and so forth, you _cannot_ migrate your old posts. This has never bothered me since Mastodon is essentially a #microblogging system, and I see microblogging as "fire and forget" in nature - any given post might be shared for a few days, but is soon forgotten unless someone bookmarks it. Besides, it's not as if the posts are actually gone from the old instance unless it closes down. But many see this as a major obstacle to migrating instances, and thus I want to know: Does it bother you that you cannot migrate your posts when migrating Mastodon instances?#Fediverse

Moderation. It’s a roller coaster.Today, a (literal) nazi opened an account and began harassing people. We received ~80 reports within minutes. That may be a record. We suspended the account, of course. But not before a lot of people yelled at us. For the record, this is not preventable when registration is open. We can only react. So be nice.My gratitude and love for the person behind this report. It made me chuckle. 🫶🧵 1/4#Moderation #Mastodon #MasTo #BeKind #PunchANazi #FediAdmin

I really like the “social network” versus “social media” distinction pointed out here.#Mastodon, to me, feels like a network. I follow people that seem interesting, often following back people who have followed me. If they happen to post “media“ that seems interesting, I may choose to experience it, or not. Either way it’s a secondary effect of the network. Other platforms that are ad-driven and algorithmic feel very different. https://jaz.co.uk/2025/10/30/there-is-one-fediverse-there-are-a-million-pickleball-courts/

Treating followers as trusted is my biggest peeve I have about Mastodon (and, probably, about other fediverse software as well). Those are completely different entities. You following me is a convenience for you. I write some public shit, you enjoy that shit, you follow me. If you are an asshole, I might have something to say, and block you, so you aren't able to see my shit and interact with it. And that's it. In a generalise case I do not need to trust you for you to follow me.But I also need to be able to share something only with the people I trust. So, I would be glad to establish a trusted circle, or a few of them, to share my toots with. There is a workaround. One may have a public account, and the private account. And this is how people are getting this functionality here. So, the need is apparent, but the functionality is lacking. Maybe it's time for me, to have two accounts as well. But knowing myself the most probable outcome is that I will be using one of them, neglecting the other. So, kinda pointless. So, I guess, I will be like the average website - sharing my personal stuff with 934 trusted partners. I meant followers. Wanna cookie?#mastodon #fediverse

Here is an interesting tidbit on how often the #Fediverse calls up websites.I'd like to think that I have a fairly popular account - as of this writing, I have 3,730 followers.About 3.5 hours, I posted a link to a wiki page of mine. So far, this post has received 3 favorites.I just checked the logs of my website. And this single link has triggered 1,103 "GET" requests to that wiki page. The vast majority seems to be from different Fediverse instances - #Mastodon and otherwise - as the post propagated from server to server, and each instance tries to get information for a preview card.I do not have much experience with website administration, so I don't know if 1,103 requests (almost all of which seem to have occurred within a few minutes of the initial posting) count as "a lot".But it might be worth remembering when considering the resources the Fediverse consumes.

When you’re a social media company, fascists are good for business, and active moderation is bad for it. So long as people keep seeking their community from profit-seeking entities, they’re going to keep running into the Trumps and Elons of the world.

A question: There has been a long-running issue with #Mastodon preview cards for links. Essential, each instance fetches the information for the preview card on its own, which with popular posta will look like a #DDoS attack.Has this been fixed in recent versions? The fix was delayed to 4.4.0 at some point, but I am not sure if it has actually been implemented yet.#FediHelp https://www.golem.de/news/wie-ein-ddos-angriff-mastodons-link-vorschau-ueberlastet-webserver-2405-184830.html

@ericwickham I don't know particular hashtags other than to suggest following as many different ones as possible. You can always unfollow a hashtag if there's too much.If you're wanting to discover Canadian news on here, I've tried to list some good accounts at https://fedi.directory/tag/canadian-news/There are good Ontario accounts at https://fedi.directory/tag/ontario-canada and Canadian accounts at https://fedi.directory/tag/canadaIf you want good news accounts in general, have a look at https://fedi.directory/news-media/

@hiphopheaven @Linux_Is_Best No, it wasn't. I haven't seen more than a handful of Nazi posts on the Fediverse in the years that I moved here, and I think the ability to defederate plays a major part in that.

Someone I know has been, I guess?, following me here while they live on #bluesky. They’ve asked me a question. I see it as a message from some bridge thing that I don’t really understand. Can I reply to them? How?#mastodon #bridgyfed

Hello, my alias is Jupiter. I’ve been using social media since the MySpace and early Twitter days but have become disenchanted with the current state of most social media, so I’m giving Mastodon a try.I’m not sure what I’ll be posting about but I will be lurking and testing the waters so to speak. Also, I’m open to any tips or helpful knowledge that anyone has concerning mastodon/fediverse. #introduction #mastodon #fediverse

Hey #mastodon Does anyone know if it's possible to filter posts from a specific user? So, for example – User BFF posts mainly about mountains and potatoes. I love BFF's mountain posts and want to keep seeing them but I disagree with BFF's opinion on potatoes. Is there a way to set a filter that hides BFF's posts on potatoes, but still lets me see everyone else's posts on potatoes?
