Wild shape was hard to read as a new player. Full casters are intimidating too. I love them too but they’re just hard to explain to newcommers.

If I ever play D&D again, I think I’m going to spend a lot of time in session 0 getting on the same page about if we’re playing D&D as a resource management game, or as a wacky hijinks game. So many people want to play the latter, but expect a long rest to be as easy as it is in video games. “I’m out of spells! Can we long rest?” “You’re out of spells after casting nearly every single round of combat in the past 3 fights, and you want to chill out for 8 to 16 hours here, in the court of the evil duke’s castle, while he’s working on a ritual to summon a demon lord in a few hours?” I mean, I kind of get it. The game is set up so you have all these cool toys. Of course you want to use them. That conflict is why I dislike per-day resources.

Cleric alignment requesites go largely unnoticed by the player. staying within one step of diety is pretty easy, probably comes automatically to most people who would be interested in the class on the first place. Alignment gets complicated for them in considering if it’s appropriate to cast magic circle or not or holy word or not. but usually it’s safe to assume for those. Paladin is responsible for I think almost all alignment hangups at the table. sure, there are others but not as often. Druid probably would be because communicating the concept of neutrality is full of hangups but I think druids are pretty underplayed.

fuck I forgot about monks and druids. okay, I guess no wonder it turned into such a big misunderstanding. that is a wider amount of people that were expected to think in terms of the alignment axis

Salt is worth 5cp per pound in D&D 2025 (a source) I wouldn’t lose my salt over that.

It’s an attempt to introduce some hint of the core gimmick of ‘blades in the dark’; a game that keeps the action moving by making you do all your planning in flashbacks–like a heist movie.

Everytime I read something like this, my mind just goes “just port Gary Gygax’s infamous “Tomb of Horrors” to your favorite scenario”

I thought so, while writing this, but the only way to make it perfectly clear would probably just be to spoil what is going to happen. Any warning, as dire as they may be, may be seen as a challenge otherwise.

Yeah, they were one of the true things I hated about the dragon books. When one of the characters went back and time and discovered that kender were straight up banned from the ‘supposedly good city’ (oh how shocking) and was horrified, I just rolled my eyes. If even the author, with carte blanche to write whatever and however they wanted, couldn’t make the habit cute, it’s never going to happen at a playing table.

Okay, I’m going to be a bit pedantic, but none of that is D&D specific; you love your GM or whoever wrote that for your party.

If you roll 4 dices one is bound to be low. If you only take the floor the DC must be very low.

i’m really good at parallel processing so i have a little binder full of (oh shit i gotta think) situations. Roll a die for the page, roll a die for the event, adlib. let my lizard brain talk while i look stuff up in the binder of (what we’re actually supposed to be doing). sometimes it’s just the party walking by people getting scammed and choosing whether or not to get involved. sometimes they stumble upon an enchanted hair salon. you never know.
