@themipper @iamhand The Monk & Robot Duology by Becky Chambers is a great read. I was really surprised, how different the tone and mood was compared to other SciFi I read before. https://www.otherscribbles.com/#/a-psalm-for-the-wild-built/ | https://www.otherscribbles.com/#/a-prayer-for-the-crown-shy/
@Princejvstin @bookstodon Footnote to your last comment in that review: as the New Management books start not less than 6 months after the end of The Regicide Report, Eve isn't on anyone's radar at the Laundry as yet. (This might be seen, in 20/20 hindsight, as a huge blunder …)
@amalia12 I think it's becoming less so, or at least I'm encountering less of it. I think that however you consume your books, it's reading. Unless you're eating them, of course. It is disappointing that not all books are available in audio, though.
@kraftner ooooh. You know what, I don't think there's any shame on looking up the kind of educational things aimed at 16 year olds.Re voltage/current/power etc., you wanna start plugging stuff in and playing immediately, or revise a bit of the relevant physics?
#JustFinished The Ultimate Hidden Truth of the World by David GraeberGraeber always challenges me to see past assumptions and my societal upbringing. This book may have been a bit too erudite for me, but I did truly enjoy it.He has some wonderful thoughts on collective action which are particularly relevant now. Some incisive commentary on modern (at the time) theories of power with a fabulous dig at feminism having gotten there ages ago. 1/2#books #bookstodon #NonFiction #anthropology
@Zodypop Welcome! if you like #roses check #WinterGarden also #Flowers etc. And some many others # to discover related to garden (and other). This is one of the things I like on here, being surprised by # and discovering so many subjects thanks to them.
#JustFinished Circular Motion by Alex FosterPerhaps the most gorgeous ecodystopia book I've ever read; this is the story of the Earth's sixth mass extinction written in the lives of a handful of people just trying to live meaningful lives. Foster's writing was lyrical and he built some gorgeous suspense in a few of the scenes. I felt really connected on an emotional level with the main characters. I would definitely read his work again. #books #bookstodon #SFF #SciFi
"Cops don't beat up burglars... The one thing most guaranteed to evoke a violent reaction from police is to challenge their right to 'define the situation.'"David Graeber quoting a former LAPD officer turned sociologist in The Ultimate Hidden Truth of the World.#books #bookstodon #NonFiction #anthropology
#Justfinished Imago by Octavia ButlerI dunno. This one really fell flat for me. More about heirarchy being the issue with humanity. With some racism is rooted in genetics thrown in. And while the thing with the aliens being able to calm people with pheromones was kind of cool in the first book, by the third, and in our current slide into patriachical violence again, it just felt wrong. I was left with the feeling that the Oankali's whole survival methodology1/2#SFF #Bookstodon #SFF #Books

@moorlock Same. If I had my head stuck in books all the time, I'd be reading one every 2-3 days. But I game, and bake, and work, and swim, and ... stuff, so my head's not even in a book during all my non-work time.
#JustFinished (again) Children of Time by Adrian TchaikovskyI had forgotten what a beautiful, hopeful ending Tchaikovsky gave us. As a life-long arachnophobe, I might not have ever read this book if I had known about the alien species. I am so glad I didn't know, as the book is truly excellent. Tchaikovsky's love of many-legged things shines through and allows us to feel it with him. (To some extent; he doesn't work ACTUAL miracles.)#SFF #SciFi #books #bookstodon
@punishmenthurts @attribot I love anthropology, and I studied economics in college. Debt definitely made me think hard about the Chicago School of economics I was taught in college. I don't necessarily think that all of his thoughts were accurate, but I loved the concept he had about how people moved from what we call a barter economy now (which he says is a bad descriptor) to using money. Good stuff, but kind of a slog...
