I think the eccentric writing was amazing. Like how the old Southpark was also amazing.

I mean, FFS. Who hires an assassin that can make thousands so thirsty with a glance?! Not being picked out of a line-up is a key attribute to pro assassining… Instead, this guy’s got people from all genders just lining up for a chance at anything, even just in their daydreams. Nah. The only way he’s an assassin is if we’re talking about how much he’s gonna slay when he’s out. That boy better have gills, NGL. 🤪

He is, although I’m gonna look funny at any GM that doesn’t homebrew that out. There’s even a Jeremy Crawford post from 2015 saying that he’d only consider fall damage to be for falls farther than however high you jumped, but they didn’t change it in the 2024 update. Harengons actually don’t even need magic to run into this issue, they can just jump high enough to injure themselves as of level 9

They also recently did a reprint of the first ~5 or so books in paperback. One of the neat things they did with the reprints is they’ve included dice rolls at the bottom of every page, so instead of needing to use dice, you can flip to a random page instead and use that as your roll.

Dreamworks just produces mediocre slop with the occasional banger, the Shrek effect got nothing to do with it. They also gave us Kung Fu Panda, How to Train your Dragon, and The Last Wish over the years, which are all great. I’m also a fan of Wild Robot, although I think the third act doesn’t really flow as nicely as the previous ones. I’ve seen it said that Japanese Animation is so popular because they treated it as an art form and took it seriously for both children’s and adult media, and it’s definitely another window into what the world would be like if the industry in the US stayed on that course from the early 00s Most of the anime production of the last two decades is generic shonen slop, the fact that it became popular has nothing to do with taking it seriously and it’s not a metric of quality. There’s some good stuff in there amid the bad, but that’s the same for western animation.

Never thought about it before, but the two systems I like most don’t do that. In chronicles of darkness, you get penalties when any of your last 3 health boxes (out of 6-10) are marked. In fate, you start getting Consequences, and those both adversely affect you and provide bonuses for your opponents. I think some people don’t like this because it can cause a death spiral, where whoever gets injured first is likely to get more injured from the penalties. But, that makes sense for a lot of genres. I routinely found it extremely irritating in BG3 when I’d do a sneak attack critical, and then the enemy would have like 3 HP left, and then they’d turn around and attack just as hard as if i’d done nothing. Unsatisfying.

I don’t need to know their exact stats, but I like (for example) having a system where you know a human’s health ranges from 6 to 10, and a gun does at least 3 damage, so you can be pretty sure if you shoot him four times he’s down. None of this, “Well, he’s a 12th level accountant so he has 78 hp”. Maybe I mostly just dislike how vague HP is in D&D. But it was probably mostly a GM issue. I’m here to roleplay, not be told immediately whether or not I can take the dude. I find it hard to roleplay when I don’t know what is in the world. Things that are very different (high level stuff, low level stuff) getting basically the same description is distracting. In real life, you get a lot of information looking at someone. Maybe I’m still just annoyed at that game where we were all 10th level and so were the basic ass soldiers.
